Tour Introduction

Travel with us on a journey to some of the forgotten battlefields of 1944-45 in northern Italy as we reach the 75th anniversary year of the final battles of the Italian Campaign. On this fascinating tour, we look at the fighting on the Coriano Ridge, along the Gothic Line, to the final battles around Bologna and up to the River Po.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Local departure by coach or Door-to-Door service, then to northern France for an overnight stay.

Day 2

To northern Italy for an overnight stay.

Day 3 - Ravenna War Cemetery

We head to Ravenna for a four-night stay. Today we visit Ravenna War Cemetery and look at the battles that took place for the town, along with seeing the memorial to the Jewish Brigade.

Day 4 - Gothic Line

Today we look at the beginning of the end of WW2 in Italy, with the fighting on the Gothic Line in 1944. We visit the Gothic Line Museum, see Coriano Ridge War Cemetery and then examine the battle for the ridge.

We have lunchtime in Rimini and visit Rimini Gurkha War Cemetery, before following the British advance in the autumn of 1944, visiting Cesena War Cemetery and the small battlefield burial ground at Meldola War Cemetery. This is where the 4th and 46th Divisions were fighting in October-November 1944.

Day 5 - Forli and Faenza

We continue the story of the final battles in Italy by starting at Forli. Here we look at the role of Indian Army troops, visiting the Indian War Cemetery and Cremation Memorial.

We spend the rest of the day following the British advance in 1944/45 from Forli to Faenza to Imola and Bologna, including the fighting on the Senio River.

We also visit the Polish War Cemetery at Bologna, the largest in Italy, where the dead from the 1945 battles are buried, before spending time at the Bologna War Museum, the ‘Memorial Museum of Liberty’.

Day 6 - Argenta Gap and the River Po

The fighting continued into the spring of 1945 and we follow British and Commonwealth operations from Villanova Canadian War Cemetery to Argenta Gap, seeing the cemetery here.

In the afternoon we look at the amphibious operations at Lake Comacchio, and finish our battlefield tour on the River Po, where the last battle took place in April 1945.

Day 7

Today we leave Italy and return to eastern France via Switzerland, staying overnight near Colmar.

Day 8 - Tank battle at Arracourt

Today we look at the fighting in the Lorraine, visiting the battlefield at Arracourt which saw one of the largest tank battles of 1944, and the Lorraine American Cemetery, which is the largest US War Cemetery in France.

We end the day in Reims for a visit to the Surrender Museum, where Allied Forces effected the German surrender in the West on 7th May 1945.

Then to northern France for an overnight stay.

Day 9

Return home.

You will stay for four nights in the Ravenna area at the 3-star Hotel Oceano Mare.

Overnight stays in France and northern Italy will be in city-style hotels.

Join coach at Interchange

Join your tour coach at the interchange.

On most tours if you’d prefer to join your tour coach at Stop 24 services, you can park your car in the car park which is accredited by the Park Mark safer parking scheme and is monitored 24 hours a day by CCTV. Payment for the parking is made on arrival using the self-service machines.

Excludes tours to Ireland and the U.K. and tours travelling via Brittany Ferries.

Door-to-Door service

On Battlefield tours of 7 days’ duration or more, you don’t even have to think about getting to your local joining point. Our Door-to-Door Service collects you from your home and takes you to meet your transfer vehicile, then brings you back at the end of the holiday. Door-to-Door Service is available within a 20-mile radius of one of our free joining points and is from £90 per car, return (up to 4 passengers per vehicle).
