Tour Introduction

WW1 saw the birth of the tank, and its first use in battle on the Somme. On this new tour we look at the use of tanks by the British. We start the tour looking at Pozieres looking at the first use of tanks before moving on to Bullecourt looking at the April 1917 attacks. We visit Hooge Crater museum before ending our first day at the moving Last Post Ceremony in Ypres. Our second day we spend looking at the Cambrai battlefields, seeing the Cambrai memorial, investigating the use of tanks between Havrincourt and Flesquieres and completing our tour at the newly opened Cambrai Tank Museum which includes an original MkIV tank used in 1917

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Local departure by coach, then to our hotel in northern France where we stay for three nights.

Day 2 - Pozières, Flanders & Ypres

We begin our tour at Pozières, seeing the original Tank Corps Memorial and looking at the first use of tanks at Flers-Courcelette.

We then travel to Bullecourt, where tanks were used to support the attacks here in April 1917. The museum here includes many tank parts found on the battlefield.

After lunchtime at Arras, we travel to Flanders to look at the use of tanks here in 1917, seeing the Tank Memorial at Poelcapelle and visiting Hooge Crater Museum which has Tank Corps exhibits.

We end the day in Ypres for the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate where tank crews killed at Passchendaele are commemorated.

Day 3 - Cambrai

Today we travel to the Cambrai Battlefields to see where over 400 tanks broke the German Hindenburg Line in November 1917.

We visit the Cambrai Memorial, see the grave of Brigadier General Bradford VC – the Boy General – before looking at the use of tanks between Havrincourt and Flesquières, seeing the tank memorial.

After lunch at Cambrai we visit the Tank Museum at Flesquières and end the day in Bourlon Wood.

You will stay for three nights at the 3-star Ibis St. Quentin Basilique. The hotel is situated in the heart of the town, with a choice of restaurants and bars within walking distance.

Join your tour coach at the interchange.

On most tours if you’d prefer to join your tour coach at Stop 24 services, you can park your car in the car park which is accredited by the Park Mark safer parking scheme and is monitored 24 hours a day by CCTV. Payment for the parking is made on arrival using the self-service machines.

Excludes tours to Ireland and the U.K. and tours travelling via Brittany Ferries.
