Tour Introduction

The Spanish Civil War, fought in Spain between 1936 and 1939, is often seen as a dress rehearsal for WW2. Men from many nations fought against Fascism in the fight against Franco, and also those from Nazi Germany who supported him. Join us on our new tour as we look at some of the key battlefields from this important conflict.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Fly to Barcelona and transfer to our hotel on the outskirts, where we stay for one night.

Included meals: Dinner

Day 2 - Ebro

Today we depart for the Ebro Battlefield area, seeing where the fighting took place in 1938.

We visit the ground around Corbera d’Ebro, seeing the war museum and the ruins of the old town destroyed in the fighting.

We will also visit some of the local information centres explaining different aspects of the conflict, as well as the remains of bunkers and trenches.

We then continue on to Tortosa for an overnight stay.

Day 3 - Valencia

Today we travel from Tortosa to Toledo, via the city of Valencia.

We will spend time in Valencia seeing the impressive Museum of Military History. The museum spans 3,500 square metres, is divided into two floors, and offers a fascinating insight into Spain’s military history, in particular, around the Valencia region.

We continue on to Toledo for a three-night stay.

Day 4 - Brunete & Madrid

Around Madrid we follow the course of the Spanish Civil War. We begin in Brunete, where one of the biggest battles on Spanish soil took place during the Civil War, and where the British Battalion fought, as part of the International Brigade in July 1937.

After lunch in Brunete, we return to Madrid to see some Spanish Civil War sites in the city, including the Reina Sofia Museum of Modern Art, where Picasso’s famous painting, Guernica, is exhibited.

Day 5 - Jarama

Today we examine the key Battle of Jarama, and visit the battlefield area in south Madrid, seeing the Memorial to the International Brigade and battlefield positions, as well as the war museum in Morata.

In the afternoon we travel to see Franco’s impressive tomb and the Valley of the Fallen Memorial, which was built to commemorate the Spanish Civil War.

Day 6

Hotel

In Barcelona, you will stay for one night at the 4-star AC Hotel Sant Cugat, before an ovenright stay in Tortosa at the 4-star hotel SB Corona Tortosa. Finally, you will stay for three nights at the 3-star hotel Zentral Mayoral in Toledo.

Join your tour coach at the interchange.

On most tours if you’d prefer to join your tour coach at Stop 24 services, you can park your car in the car park which is accredited by the Park Mark safer parking scheme and is monitored 24 hours a day by CCTV. Payment for the parking is made on arrival using the self-service machines.
