This tour will cover the following key events

  • Battle of Cambrai - 20 November 1917
    The Battle of Cambrai was faught in November/December 1917, was the first major battle in which tanks were used on a large scale. A surprise attack was sprung and initially overwhelmed the German defences, however the Germans launched a major counterattack, forcing the Britians to retreat.

Tour Introduction

The Battle of Cambrai saw the first major use of tanks in World War 1, when in November 1917 more than 400 Mark IV tanks broke the Hindenburg Line. On this centenary tour heralding the true birth of tank warfare, we spend time visiting Cambrai and the battlefields that surround the city. In Cambrai, we attend any major commemorations that will be taking place, before we visit the Cambrai Memorial at Louverval. We also see the sites of Canal du Nord and Bourlon Wood, where heavy fighting took place, and Havrincourt and Flesquieres where the tanks attacked.

Nov 18 to 20 - Cambrai Commemorations

We will attend any major commemorations in the Cambrai area on 20th November and during our battlefield tour look at the Cambrai Memorial at Louverval, discover the story of the Boy General at Hermies, see where the heavy fighting took place along the Canal du Nord and Bourlon Wood, and follow where the tanks attacked between Havrincourt and Flesquieres. We will also visit the city of Cambrai itself on this tour.

On most tours if you’d prefer to join your tour coach at Stop 24 services, you can park your car in the car park which is accredited by the Park Mark safer parking scheme and is monitored 24 hours a day by CCTV. Payment for the parking is made on arrival using the self-service machines.
