This tour will cover the following key events

  • Battle of Messines - 7 June 1917
    Arguably one of the most successful operations of WW1 on the Western Front, the Battle of Messines saw nineteen mines being detonated underneath the German mines, in a bid to secure Messines Ridge.

Tour Introduction

The World War 1 Battle of Messines in June 1917, witnessed the largest man-made explosion in history, until the atomic bomb, when nineteen mines exploded under the Messines Ridge as part of the British attack on this high ground near Ypres. Join us on this special tour to be on the ground exactly a century later, as we join the special commemorations of this significant event. Also spending time in Ypres and Flanders, we see battlefield sites, pay our respects at cemeteries and visit museums.

Jun 5

Local departure by coach, then to Belgium for a four-night stay.

Jun 6 - Ypres & Messines Ridge

We start our tour in Ypres with a visit to the In Flanders Fields Museum before having lunch at Hooge Crater, with time to visit the museum. In the afternoon we travel down the Messines Ridge looking at where the mines were blown in 1917 visiting St. Eloi, Wytschaete and Spanbroekmolen as well as Messines itself and the Ploegsteert area.

Jun 7 - Commemorations

On the 7th June 2017 we attend any special commemorations, which may be in the early morning. We will also visit Messines battlefield sites during this day. We will also attend a special Last Post at the Menin Gate that evening.

Jun 8 - Flanders

On our final day in Flanders we look at life behind the lines and travel to Poperinghe where we visit Talbot House, going in the hop-loft chapel and seeing the museum. We have lunchtime in the town, then visit the Death Cells and graves of those executed here by firing squad before seeing Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery with its visitors centre. We continue with our behind the lines theme and visit Bailleul, used extensively by British troops in June 1917, seeing the memorial to 25th Division and Bailleuil Communal Cemetery.

Hotel

You will stay for four nights at a minimum 3-star hotel in Belgium, such as the Mercure in Roeselare or the Alize Mouscron or the Horizon Ath Lessines in Ghislenghien.

You can also choose to stay at the 3-star Novotel in the centre of Ypres, near the Menin Gate.

On most tours if you’d prefer to join your tour coach at Stop 24 services, you can park your car in the car park which is accredited by the Park Mark safer parking scheme and is monitored 24 hours a day by CCTV. Payment for the parking is made on arrival using the self-service machines.
