Tour Introduction

Join us on this centenary tour as we commemorate the Last 100 Days of WW1, visiting battlefield sites in France and Belgium such as Ypres, Mons and Loos. We begin our journey in Mons where Britain’s involvement in WW1 began and ended. Seeing St Symphorien Cemetery and Nimy Bridge battlefield, we pay our respects to the brave men who fought and those who lost their lives here. The second day of our tour sees us visit Ypres, where we attend the Last Post Ceremony at Menin Gate, mark the centenary of the Last 100 Days and witness the 90th Anniversary of the Great Pilgrimage. Finally, we visit the battle sites of Loos, seeing cemeteries and memorials.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Local departure by coach, then to our mainstay hotel in Belgium or northern France for a four night stay.

Day 2 - Mons & Nimy Bridge

On our first day on the Battlefields we visit Mons, where for the British the war began and ended. At St Symphorien Cemetery we see the ‘First and Last’ casualties of WW1 and the grave of one of the first Victoria Cross winners. We then visit the battlefield at Nimy Bridge where the first Victoria Crosses were awarded to men of the Royal Fusiliers and also visit the spot where the first shots were fired by the British Army. We have an extended lunch period in Mons for free-time in this beautiful Belgian city, and then visit the Mons War Museum.

Day 3 - 90th Anniversary of the Great Pilgrimage

On the 8th August 2018 the Royal British Legion will deliver a national level commemorative event at the Menin Gate to mark the centenary of the start of ‘The Last 100 Days’. Today, we will attend the event in Ypres as spectators which will coincide with the 90th Anniversary of the Great Pilgrimage. We will remain in Ypres to attend the moving Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial, held at 8pm each evening.

Day 4 - Loos, Bethune & Fromelles

On our final battlefield day we travel to the Battlefield of Loos where Rudyard Kipling’s son, Jack, was killed in 1915. Here we visit Dud Corner Cemetery and the Loos Memorial, and examine the story of Kipling’s only son. After lunch period at Bethune, we travel into the ‘forgotten front’ of northern France seeing the Indian Corps Memorial at Neuve-Chapelle and end the day at Fromelles seeing the Australian Memorial Park and VC Corner Cemetery.

The order of the itinerary may differ, with the exception of being in Ypres on the 8th August 2018 to view the Royal British Legion Great Pilgrimage 90 event which will remain despite any other changes.

Please note; the option to join the tour from Northern Ireland (Tour ref: 7BRB) will only operate subject to minimum numbers being achieved. Leger Holidays will advise in Spring 2018 whether the minimum number has been reached and whether the Northern Ireland option will operate or not. Should the option not be available then a full refund will be provided.

Hotel

You will stay for four nights at a minimum 3-star hotel in Belgium or northern France.

On most tours if you’d prefer to join your tour coach at Stop 24 services, you can park your car in the car park which is accredited by the Park Mark safer parking scheme and is monitored 24 hours a day by CCTV. Payment for the parking is made on arrival using the self-service machines.
