Passchendaele Anniversary – 31st July 2017

About the tour: Passchendaele Anniversary – 31st July 2017

Tour Introduction

The 3rd Battle of Ypres, popularly known as the Battle of Passchendaele, began on 31 July 1917 and raged through the next four months as summer turned to winter and the landscape of Flanders turned into a moonscape of shell holes filled with mud, muck and slime. Sadly too, it was the scene of over 300,000 British Army casualties. July 2017 marks the centenary of the start of this iconic battle which, along with The Somme, has come for many to symbolise The Great War.

Tour Itinerary

Jul 29

Regional departure by coach, then to our hotel in Belgium or northern France, where we stay for four nights.

Jul 30 to Aug 1

We spend three days following an in-depth study of the Third Battle of Ypres visiting sites connected to it, including Pilkem Ridge to follow the Welsh Division, Langemarck German Cemetery, Tyne Cot, the Passchendaele Museum, Polygon Wood, Hooge Crater, and the In Flanders Fields Museum. On the 31st July, the actual anniversary of the start of the battle, a ticket-only event will take place in the afternoon at the Tyne Cot Cemetery. Due to the limited space at the cemetery this will be a ticketed event with a public ballot* being held for those wishing to obtain tickets. For those applicants who are successful in obtaining a ticket in the ballot, we will have a special itinerary to include the ceremony at Tyne Cot. We will have a separate itinerary for those passengers who are not successful in obtaining a ticket to the Tyne Cot ceremony in the ballot. On the anniversary day, 31st July, we will be ‘on the ground’ in the Passchendaele area, visiting some of the major sites and towns. Should any large screens be in place broadcasting the ceremony from Tyne Cot we will be in a position to be able to view these.
